The global increase in antibiotic resistance necessitates the exploration of alternative antimicrobial agents. In this study, the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of ethanol and chloroform extracts of Fomitopsis pinicola (Sw.) P. Karst were evaluated. The chemical components of the extracts were determined by GC/MS analysis. The ethanol extract was found to contain major components such as 9-octadecanoic acid, methyl dihomo-gamma-linolenate, palmitic acid, and ethyl oleate. Meanwhile, the chloroform extract was predominantly observed to contain oleic acid, stearic acid, methyl behenate, and palmitic acid.
The antimicrobial effects of the extracts against pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, S. aureus MRSA, various Escherichia coli strains, and Candida albicans were analyzed using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal/Fungicidal Concentration (MBC/MFC) tests. The results showed relatively high MIC values. Additionally, the DPPH radical scavenging test performed to determine antioxidant activity indicated that neither extract exhibited antioxidant properties.
Although previous studies have suggested that F. pinicola possesses antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, the results of this study were found to be lower than those reported in the literature. This discrepancy may be attributed to insufficient extract concentration or the ineffectiveness of extraction methods in fully revealing the biological activity of the compounds. This study aims to contribute to the scientific knowledge regarding the development of novel natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents, suggesting the need for further verification with higher concentrations and alternative extraction methods.
